The sudden loss of a loved one shakes the foundation of your world. When my father-in-law passed away under unclear circumstances, I found myself thrust into a situation that demanded more than grief. I needed answers. This is the story of how I became involved in uncovering the truth behind his death and the first steps I took to investigate what really happened.

The Moment Everything Changed

It first started in 1968 when my boyfriend, Jim, called me after his father’s body was returned to Illinois. His first words were, "Suz it's not him — It's not my dad". The tone in his voice stopped me cold. He was beside himself. Insisting that the man in the casket—the one we were supposed to bury the next day couldn't possibly be his father. Then he told me something else that didn't make sense; Uncle John had noticed his dad's wallet had been returned, but it was missing many personal items—family photos, IDs, and other things that should have been inside.

"This story is a 9-part series — and this is where the mystery begins. New chapters drop weekly. If you're wondering what really happened (and why Jim was certain the man in the casket wasn't his father), keep reading for the next installment and the clues that follow."
